State Department offers reward for arrest of Romanian fugitives

Information leading to the arrest of two alleged Romanian cybercriminals could lead to more than a $1 million reward, depending on which suspect is caught.

Tips that result in the arrest of Nicolae Popescu, the leader of an international organized crime group, will net up to $1 million, whereas information leading to the arrest or conviction of Dumitru Daniel Bosogioiu can earn up to $750,000, according to an FBI press release. Bosogioiu helped Popescu pull off a multimillion dollar cyber fraud scheme.

The pair and their co-conspirators created phony websites, fake passports and counterfeit service marks to successfully steal money from duped victims.

As part of the scheme, the group advertised high-value items they were selling in online marketplaces, such as eBay and AutoTrader.com. However, the items did not exist and victims transferred money to the group's accounts.
