Sophos report tempers good with the bad

The latest Threat Management Report from Sophos paints mixed picture, and carries a recommendation that will put a smile on Steve Jobs face.

The report said that while there has been sharp drop in the number new viruses and worms, this has been more than compensated by increases in other types of malware propagated by organized crime. Spyware, trojans and phishing are now the favoured methods of attack by criminals, according to Sophos.

New trojans outweigh viruses and worms by four to one compared to two to one in the first half of 2005 and the dominance of Windows based attacks, including malware, is now so high that Sophos has taken the unprecedented step of recommending home PC users switch to Macs. This, despite the appearance of the first malware to attack Mac OS X in February 2006.

"The rise of malware will concern many, the criminals are obviously making money from their code otherwise they’d give up the game" said Graham Cluley from Sophos.
