Facebook supply chain leak leads to Oculus headsets shipping with hidden messages

Share

Facebook admitted a supply chain data leak in its new Oculus headsets resulted in the devices shipping out with secret messages reading “Big Brother Is Watching You,” “The Masons Were Here,” “This Space for Rent,” and “Hi iFixit! We See You!."

The messages were physically printed inside tens of thousands of new Oculus motion controllers and were presumably there to be found by journalists and developers who received prototype and pre-release versions for review, but some of the devices sent into the consumer market also had the messages printed inside.

“Unfortunately, some ‘easter egg’ labels meant for prototypes accidentally made it onto the internal hardware for tens of thousands of Touch controllers,” Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell tweeted April 12.  Some Sophos researchers predict the mistake could actually make the affected devices more valuable than the ones not affected as some collectors value Easter eggs.
